Firefox 3 Following Windows Security Settings

Firefox 3 users, who also have jacked up the security settings on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 to their most strict level, may find it trickier to download files with Firefox due to key changes recently made by Mozilla.

Firefox 3 may block downloads of all executable files (eg: .exe or .msi) if the Windows Internet security option, “Launching applications and unsafe files” is set to “Disabled”. This security option is available on Windows Vista and Windows XP systems with Internet Explorer 7 installed.

If you see an error message “This download has been blocked by your Security Zone Policy” under the filename in the Firefox Downloads window, it means you have set the Security level of Internet Explorer 7 to the highest. Read this article to fix the issue.

Are Your Friends on Google Talk Really Offline?

A bug has been found in Google Talk which lets you find out whether your friends are really offline or are hiding by being invisible.

Follow these steps to find out your friend’s real status:

  1. Set the chat as off the record with the target user when he/she is online.
  2. Now next time when you can’t find them online try sending a message to that user.
  3. If they are invisible, they will receive your chat message. If they are really offline, you will receive an error “ did not receive your chat“.

Try catching one of friends now!

Google Launces Its Own Wiki Service – Knol

Google KnolGoogle had announced a few months ago that they were testing a new service called Knol. Today they launched the service Google Knol. Knols are authoritative articles about specific topics, written by people who know about those subjects.

“The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. It’s their knol, their voice, their opinion.” – This is how the Google Blog describes Knol. A diagram explaining how Knol works:

You can even earn a part of the revenue generated from your Knols if you have an Adsense account.

We think this is basically an attack by Google to its new competitor – Wikipedia. Let us see whether Google Knol succeeds to beat down Wikipedia and deliver quality content like them.

You can find a list of differences between Google Knol and Wikipedia here.

What do you think about the new service?

Google to Acquire Digg

Google Digg DealNews about Google acquiring Digg were first heard in the blogosphere about 5 months ago but Digg CEO Jay Adelson declared those news as rumors almost as soon as the news spread. This time its not looking like a rumor. The two companies have reportedly signed a letter of intent and are close to a deal that will bring Digg under the Google News brand. Sources say the acquisition price in arount $200 million.

TechCrunch reports that the two companies are in final negotiations, although it could take a couple of weeks before the deal is closed. Despite the major deal points been agreed on, the acquisition could nevertheless fall apart. Google has been recently spotted testing a Digg style voting method in their search results too.

If the Google-Digg is agreed upon, Digg’s three year ad deal would be terminated. Microsoft was also previously bidding high for acquiring Digg. They don’t seem to be interested in it now.

This May Help Your Firefox Memory Leak

Now, this is by no means a REAL fix for the Firefox memory leak, but it certainly does appear to help it quite a bit. This little fix will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, and as a result it will take up less than 10MB of memory while minimized.
